GLAUCOMA

Glaucoma is a medical disease that affects the eye. It can occur after fluid builds up in the front part of the cornea. The pressure in the eye caused by this fluid buildup is what leads to damage in the optic nerve. Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of blindness in people over 60 years old. Negative side effects, including blindness caused by glaucoma, can often be prevented using a course of early treatment – ask your ophthalmologist for more information. LEARN MORE

CATARACTS

Cataracts start small, and initially they may only have a small effect on your vision. Things may seem a little blurry — like looking at a kaleidoscope or as if you were in an impressionist painting. The world may seem cloudy, blurry, or dim. These effects usually increase over time, until the patient becomes disoriented and in greater need of visual assistance. As cataracts become more advanced, they begin to darken with a yellow or brown tinge. This gradual process begins to affect night vision and will make some activities like driving more difficult. In fact, a study from Curtin University in Australia found that treating cataracts reduced the risk of car accidents by 13 percent. If you suspect you have cataracts, be very careful at night and don’t drive when your vision is compromised. LEARN MORE

PREMIUM INTRAOCULAR LENSE

Intraocular lenses (IOL) are small artificial lenses for the eye, typically replacing damaged lenses that have been removed during cataract surgery. There are several different types of intraocular lenses available to patients in Shreveport depending on the individual’s needs:

  • Monofocal intraocular lenses are tuned to only focus on a short, medium, or long range distance.
  • Multifocal intraocular lenses are tuned to focus on both short and long range distances, using different regions of the lens that must be focused on by the patient.
  • Accommodative, or premium, intraocular lenses are able to move and change shape within the eye to allow for a more natural visual experience that the patient is used to. LEARN MORE

ANTERIOR SEGMENT

The anterior segment of the eye can be damaged by trauma or sometimes during surgery for other problems like glaucoma or cataracts. Repairing these problems is within a very specialized range of procedures only offered by a few surgeons in the Shreveport – Bossier City area. Anterior segment reconstruction is the medical name for a set of specialized techniques that are used to repair damage to the pupil or the iris of the eye. These procedures are most effective when they are performed in conjunction with a corneal transplantation procedure. If performed this way, anterior segment reconstruction can prove to be a very effective and low-risk method to treat severe ocular trauma or the complications associated with a failed surgery, disease, or eye injury.
